Race vehicle 1996 Ford F150 with beam front and 3 link rear suspension. The motor and transmission are Chevrolet – 6.0 liter and 4L80E.
We started 9th of 13 in class. On the 1st lap Craig passed 7 of the 8 starters in front of him and was 1st on corrected time. He lost time changing a flat tire out on the course and a co-driver change on the second lap. The 3rd and 4th laps lap times were both fast for the class. Craig finished first by almost 25 minutes.
The weather was normal for this time of year – cool (45°F at the start and 70°F at finish) and windy – a steady 10 to 15 mph.
As usual, this was a well attended race with most spectators crowded around the “The Wall”. Some caution tape kept the spectators back but broken vehicles at “The Wall” is always a potential problem when competitors put on a show jump for the spectators. This year on the first lap there was a dramatic end-over-end roll over and another vehicle broke a rear axle.
The Nitto Dune Grappler tires provided very stable and predictable ride. We had 1 flat on the course that might have been a rim failure after hitting a rock and 2 slow leaks that were changed in the pits.
This is the 4th year we have been racing this truck. Craig lives in Laguna Niguel, CA and is a Supervisor with UPS in Aliso Viejo, CA. Craig is the class 1450 and overall leader in the MDR California series after 5 of 7 events.
