Twin I-Beam & Equal Length I-Beam Long Travel Suspension Guide | Giant Motorsports

Twin I-Beam & Equal-Length I-Beam Long Travel Suspension

Giant Motorsports has been building I-beam long travel suspension for Ford, Chevy, and Toyota trucks for decades. This is the guide to understanding what twin I-beam suspension is, how equal-length I-beam kits improve on it, and which kit is right for your truck.

What Is Twin I-Beam Suspension?

Twin I-beam (TIB) suspension is a front suspension design used by Ford on F-series trucks and Broncos from the early 1970s through 1996. Instead of a solid front axle or A-arm coilovers, Ford mounted each front wheel on its own independent I-beam that pivots from a radius arm — one beam on the driver side, one on the passenger. This gave Ford trucks independent front suspension with a relatively simple, durable design that could handle heavy loads and rough terrain.

The downside: as the beams droop and compress, the wheel moves in an arc — causing the tire to scrub in and out. The further the beam droops, the worse the scrub. This limits how much travel you can get from the stock setup before the geometry gets unmanageable.

Equal-Length I-Beam: The Long Travel Upgrade

Giant Motorsports equal-length I-beam kits solve the scrub problem by replacing the stock twin I-beam setup with longer beams of equal length. By making both beams the same length and positioning the pivot points correctly, wheel scrub is dramatically reduced — allowing much greater suspension travel without the handling problems of the stock setup.

Our prismatic all-plate beam design eliminates tubing entirely. Three 3/16″ plates form a triangular prismatic cross-section — substantially stronger than traditional tube-and-plate I-beam designs. Dana 44 spindles upgrade your front axle strength at the same time.
